Pekka Kilpeläinen von der Uni Helsinki hat einen Artikel über SGML & XML Content Models geschrieben. Es geht darum, mit welchem Aufwand SGML-Inhaltsmodelle, die den AND-Konnektor verwenden, in äquivalente XML-Inhaltsmodelle umgewandelt werden können.

  • Bekanntmachung von Jon Bosak: At the request of the W3C XML WG, James Clark has put into the form of a Note a proposal made some time ago for a simple method for associating stylesheets with XML documents. This method closely parallels the mechanism used for the same purpose in HTML 4.0. Das W3C hat kürzlich die Mathematical Markup Language verabschiedet. MathML ist eine XML-Anwendung. Für die Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language gibt es erst eine »Proposed Recommendation«.

  • Im jüngsten Mozilla-Source ist James Clarks XML-Parser enthalten. Ich habe daraufhin den Vorschlag gemacht, auch Jade zu integrieren. Damit wären dann client-seitige DSSSL-Transformationen möglich. Die Diskussion wird in netscape.public.mozilla.general geführt.
  • Zwei Infos von R.V. Guha@netscape.com:
    • Adobe, Netscape, IBM and Sun have just submitted a proposal to the W3C to do Vector Graphics using XML. The complete submission is available online at http://www.w3.org/Submission/1998/06/
    • The first public draft of RDF Schemas just went online. Included in the draft are examples describing the Dublin Core and Search Queries in RDF. The draft is available at http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-rdf-schema

Zitate aus zwei weiteren Postings bzgl. XML-Support in Netscape 5 (Posting 1 / Posting 2):
Mozilla is going to have a very serious XML component. (Its in my tree right now, waiting to be checked in). We are using James Clarks parser. There is a DOM layer that builds the element tree on top of that. For now, we are using a combination of CSS, HTML elements from the HTML namespace and XML-Link for rendering. As soon as XSL stabilizes, we will be doing XSL. Personally, as the module owner for XML, I'd much rather see mozilla become a kick-ass XML browser...

As soon as we made the free source announcement, some of the thought leaders in the XML community (Jon Bosak, James Clark, Tim Bray, et. al.) and I started talking. It became clear that James Clark's parser was the best around, etc. We designed an API for applications within Navigator to use his parser etc. He wrote all that stuff. Netscape legal strongly preferred that all the sources that went out last week were under NPL. (James Clark's parser is under MPL). Thats why the first tar ball did not include his parser and the next tar ball will include it. Hope this helps. No, we are not holding anything back. Lot of work needs to be done, but its going to be fun. Guha

    Take a look at a JAVA DTD/XML editor. An alpha version ( free of course ) is available for download. I wish it can be useful. It come in two languages ( english and french ). Ein Informationsschnipsel über die XML/XLL/XSL-Unterstützung im Navigator 5 (aus einer Netscape-Newsgruppe zitiert):
I am hoping to have the XML related documentation up in a couple of days.
To answer your particular questions --- yes, we do support XLL. There is no work being done currently on XSL --- its way way too much in flux (even the scope of the working group is in flux).

    I've released a new version of my XML parser in C, previously called as xmltok, but now renamed expat (EXtensible markup language PArser Toolkit). See http://www.jclark.com/xml/expat.html for more information. This is the parser that is being used to add support for XML to Netscape Navigator 5 and Perl. I've switched to using the new Mozilla Public License for this release and future releases.

  • Von W. Eliot Kimber gibt es eine erste DSSSL-Implementierung von XPointer. Zu finden unter http://www.drmacro.com/hyprlink/xlink/. Zitat aus der Ankündigung:

    At this point, it supports all four absolute location terms and all the relative terms except preceding (I have a bug somewhere that I haven't chased down). It does not yet do attribute qualification.

    The functions are provided as a DSSSL function package you can use by reference from other packages. It is provided as a service to the community and carries no intellectual property restrictions on its use.

  • The version 1.1 of OpenTag has been released: http://www.opentag.org/.
    OpenTag is a XML-based format for encoding text extracted from any original format (i.e. EXE, RC, MIF, RTF, Java property, HTML, etc.) and be able to merge it back after some processing has been done on the text.
  • Microsoft is expected to announce next month plans to use XML as a link for communication between the Component Object Model (COM) and CORBA.

  • Folgende News wurden von Tim Bray über die XML-Dev-Liste verbreitet: Although a remarkable proportion of the world's XML cognoscenti were in the big room in Seattle today, those who were not may be interested to hear that Larry Wall demonstrated perl reading XML in about 8 different ways (he used it to generate his HTML slides), and R.V. Guha of Netscape demonstrated Nav5 showing an ordinary-looking Web page with a form and a couple of pictures, and when he did "View Source", it was XML with CSS styles, plus HTML forms and images transcluded via XLink.
    Neither are finished/shipping; but source code for everything will be on the web before too long.
    Both the Perl and Navigator projects are basing their work on James Clark's C-language processor.
    And it still would have been an interesting technology day without either of those. Too many other details to go into now, but maybe the most amusing thing was that while Henry Thomson was demo-ing his lightweight XML wf-instance editor, Larry Wall (on the same panel, hence on-stage) quietly downloaded and installed it via his cellphone.

Ein neues XML-Tool ist erschienen. Der Werbetext liest sich folgendermaßen: Media Design in*Progress today released XPublish 1.0, the first website publishing system that is based on the XML 1.0 document standard. Webmasters can use XPublish to efficiently author, publish and maintain middle sized and large websites to deploy on any platform.
